Visit Cairo, Nile & Abu Simbel

There is really nothing that can bring Ancient Egypt to life like seeing Egypt for yourself. Tick off the quintessential bucket list items in Cairo before sailing south in between the contrasts of the Sahara against the lush greenery either side of the Nile to witness some of the most incredible ancient sites and hieroglyphs in Edfu and Luxor. If you can spare the time Abu Simbel is a must-see - the last remaining colossal carvings for Rameses II and his devotion to his Queen Nefertari will blow your mind.

Take a Cruise Down the Nile River

The world’s longest river and its extraordinary monuments, the stunningly fertile valley and the barren beauty of the surrounding desert, the light and heat, and the joy of slow travel in a superfast world all add up to one of the highlights of a trip to Egypt. By night there is a variety of entertainment when you cruise - cocktails, dancing and fancy-dress parties where passengers are encouraged to ‘dress like an Egyptian’. So fun!

Visit the Cairo Museum

Cairo’s Egyptian Museum is a pretty pink building, home to an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. If you want to immerse yourself even more in Egyptian culture, I always try to learn a few local words and phrases as it really makes travelling easier. Start with 'Salām alaykum' - that’s 'hello' in Egyptian Arabic!

What to eat & drink in Egypt

Feasting on traditional Egyptian food is one of the best parts of any trip to Egypt, and we’ll show you where to find all the best eats.

Ful Medames

You’ll be eating like the ancient Egyptians when you bite into ful medames, a classic breakfast dish made from fava beans. These tasty beans can be prepared in dozens of different ways, like topping it with lemon juice, butter, olive oil, sausage, cheese and fried eggs, or wrapping them up in a fluffy pita bread. Delicious!

Kushari

If you’re after some Egyptian street food, look no further than Kushari, a beloved dish made from macaroni, rice, chickpeas and black lentils smothered in tomato sauce and fried onions. It’s a total carb-fest and one of Egypt’s best comfort foods. Top it off with a dash of chilli sauce, garlic vinegar or crispy onions.

Falafel

When we think of falafel we think big flavour, and the Egyptians have put an extra tasty twist on this world favourite. Ta’meya (Egyptian falafel) is made with crushed fava beans mixed with chickpea flour, leek, garlic, onion and all kinds of herbs and spices like parsley, paprika, cumin and cayenne pepper. Wrap it in a pita, top it with tahini and you’re set!

Packing tips for Egypt

Light Clothing

Egypt is a conservative country and sweltering hot for most of the year, so it’s best to wear light, loose-fit clothes that cover your shoulders, knees and midriff while being respectful.

Scarf

A scarf always comes in handy in Egypt, from sheltering you from the sand and heat, to covering your shoulders for modesty.

Sun Protection

Whatever the season, always come prepared for Egypt’s blazing sunshine and sandy desert with a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.

Pack for Sustainable Travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

How to Travel Responsibly in Egypt

Respect the Religious Customs

The state religion of Egypt is Islam, so you’ll need to be respectful of customs like dressing modestly, not being intimate in public and not drinking in public.

Use Water Wisely

Egypt suffers from a severe water shortage so make sure you use water sparingly, with shorter showers, turning taps off tightly and using towels and sheets more than once.

Take Care of the Turtles

Sea turtles are precious residents of the Red Sea and you can help keep them safe in nesting season by giving them plenty of room and never using flash photography.
