Today we fly to Johannesburg, the city of Gold, where we jump in vehicles for our trip up to Kruger National Park.

Kruger National Park

We'll travel through the region to our accommodation for the night on the border of this famous wildlife haven. Here the Kruger National Park awaits us. Site of the epic YouTube viral video Battle at Kruger, the Park is a sprawling wilderness of bush and terrain that houses the famous Big Five (lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo) along with hundreds of species of native birds, ancient trees and meandering rivers. It's ours to explore for the next two days. After the long days travel, the included buffet dinner will taste even better tonight.

Stay

DAY 5 - Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park

We're up early for our first taste of the fresh morning air that tells us we're deep in the African bush. We'll venture to the Park gate and enter at sunrise, just the right time to see some of Africa's elusive predators finishing off their nocturnal hunts. We'll discover who in the group has the 'Luck of the bush' and best spotting eyes. Lunch will be at one of the main camps in the park and we'll relax here in the midday heat. In the afternoon we depart for another game drive, as the temperatures start cooling and the wildlife become more active, as we make our way to the park exit for sunset. A buffet dinner awaits us at the Lodge tonight.

Stay

Shalati Safari Camp (or similar)

INCLUDED EXPERIENCES

  • Keep your eyes peeled for 'The Big Five' on a full day game drive in the Kruger National Park

DAY 6 - Kruger National Park to Emalahleni

Kruger National Park

The game of hide and seek continues as we traverse into the park, keeping our eyes open for any wildlife that evaded us the day before. Keep your eyes peeled for any movement of giraffe, hyena, antelope or even the elusive cheetah lurking deep in the bush. Around midday we depart the park for the final time and stop in at the Protrack Anti-Poaching Centre to learn about wild animal conservation with a local ranger. Walking through a 'poaching pit', we'll be shown how to look out for poaching snares placed around the area, simulating what rangers have to do in the bush, as the ranger explains the plight of poaching and rhinos in Africa. Fully schooled, we'll hop back in our vehicles and drive halfway to Johannesburg.

Emalahleni

Here, halfway to Johannesburg, we'll bunk down before for our flight to Victoria Falls tomorrow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions group

Are flights included in my trip?

International flights to/from the destination your trip starts and ends in are not included in the cost of the trip, and must be purchased separately. You can book these independently if you want to shop around for the best quote, or through your travel agent. You can depart from Kasane Airport in Botswana on the 14.00 flight to Johannesburg or take the free transfer back to Shearwater Village in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe where it is easy to arrange a transfer to Victoria Falls Airport for flights from 13.00.

Any flights you take during your Contiki are included in the cost of your trip. On certain African trips we use planes to get you from A to B as quickly as possible, and all of this is included.

What documents do I need to travel?

All Visas can be acquired on arrival in the countries we visit. It is also essential that you have any necessary vaccinations & comply with all laws of the countries visited.

What are the luggage restrictions?

Luggage restrictions are due to our two internal flights – which means baggage of 20kg and a day bag. Suitcases with wheels are discouraged as some for some accommodation you will need to drag them through the sand. Your day bag should be a backpack, duffel bag or satchel only (no small luggage cases or suitcases with wheels)

A pair of binoculars is crucial for any safari and your most important tool for wildlife viewing. It is highly recommended to bring a pair with you. Summers are very hot with scattered thunder showers while winters get cold, especially on safari, so please pack accordingly.

What do the Contiki team do?

People are at the heart of everything we do, and our team is what makes our trips the best. Our worldwide On-Road Team, locally based staff & network of Local Guides are all extensively trained & widely travelled, & are the best in the business. But we know it’s not just about training, it’s about passion & our team have it in their blood.
Your Trip Manager is like your walking, talking guidebook – just for you. They plan your itinerary every day, organise your food and accomodation and book your Free Time Add ons, and because they know everything about where you’re going, you will too. Your Drivers are the experts on getting you from A to B efficiently and safely in Africa. They know their way around like the back of their hands & they’ll drop you at your door & unload your bags for you. Local Guides provide specialist knowledge when you need it, like when you’re on a safari, and will always help you avoid the tourist traps.

What's not included that I should budget for?

How much spending money you’ll need will depend on the duration of the trip and how much you anticipate spending on personal expenses like alcohol or shopping. Before you travel, it’s also a good idea to read up on and get an idea of the Free Time Add-Ons you think you’ll want to do on trip, as these will form part of your overall budget. We’d advise doing some research on your chosen destinations beforehand, looking at things like:

- Cost of a local lunch

- Cost of a local dinner

- Cost of a local taxi

- Cost of entry to a sightseeing spot

It is crucial to have US$ in cash before your arrival to Africa. Most of our accommodations and activities take card however there is always the chance that card machines are down and having US$ in hand will 100% be required at some stage of the trip. In all areas of the service industry in Africa, whether it’s restaurants, bars, hotels or taxis, it’s common practice to tip if you feel that the service received has been excellent. The same goes for your Contiki team; if you feel that their service has been exceptional then feel free to tip them. Our travellers often ask what to tip, we suggest 3.00 US$ per person per day. Remember that tipping (& how much you tip) is optional - it’s entirely up to you.

Will I be able to access WiFi on my trip?

There will be WiFi at some lodges and most hotels, but when you’re staying in safari camps you may be off-grid. But when you’re this close to nature, camping under starswept skies, a mobile detox isn’t such a bad thing. You’ll still be able to upload your best snaps as you travel. Trip departures from the 27 October 2019 to 22 March 2020 will be staying for two nights in lodge accommodation rather than camping due to the heat and rainy season over this time in the Chobe.

What are Contiki’s sustainability credentials?

We believe that travelling sustainably and consciously, matters. Contiki Cares is our commitment to protecting the communities we visit, the wildlife we interact with, and the planet we all share. Our founding partner, the TreadRight Foundation was established 10 years ago as a not-for-profit organisation focused on promoting sustainable tourism within The Travel Corporation’s family of brands. From a Township visit in Cape Town to an Anti-Poaching experience outside Kruger National Park, we make sure our African experiences give something back to this incredible continent.
