INTRODUCTION TO CAIRO

Whenever someone mentions Egypt, you probably think Pyramids, Cleopatra and the Nile. Sure, Egypt is all those amazing things, but it’s also so much more. From the world of the Ancient Egyptians to the spread of Islam, Egyptian culture is a blend of different peoples and traditions. This rich melting pot is best represented in its capital city. Welcome to Cairo, Egypt: the vibrant centre of one of the oldest countries in the world.

Even if you’re not a history buff, it’s hard not to be fascinated by the beliefs and customs of the Ancient Egyptians. Gaze in awe at the grandeur of the Great Pyramids of Giza, the final resting place of many great Pharaohs and their queens. Pose for a photo with the Sphinx and its lost nose. Jump on the back of a camel and tour the Sahara grounds, which stretch all the way out to Libya and beyond.

If you want to see the sarcophagi of these ancient rulers, head straight to the Egyptian Museum. Here, you’ll learn more about everyday life for the ancient Egyptians. Discover the influence of Greeks and Romans in the area, giving rise to the formation of Coptic Christianity, whose presence is still very much alive in Egypt today. Hitch a ride to the top of Mokattam Hill to check out the Saladin Citadel. Here, admire the beauty of its internal Mosques and soak up the vistas of the city.

When it comes to entertainment, there are so many things to do in Cairo. Hosting a variety of arts and music festivals throughout the year, catch a jazz performance or a local film. If you fancy a bit of a dance, one of the city’s many bars and clubs is sure to hit the spot.

And don’t even get us started on the food: Egyptian cuisine is packed full of flavour and carbs. From delicious fud mudammas for breakfast, koshary for lunch and hamam mahshi for dinner, you’ll be rolling back onto the plane. Eat, see and do it all so you have #noregrets about your time in Cairo.
