Interlaken is known for its breathtaking landscapes, friendly locals and pristine environment. From the peaks of Jungfraujoch to the fresh water valleys.
As a solo female traveller backpacking through Europe on a budget, the thought of Switzerland was initially a bit of hit and miss for me. But the one way flight soon became one of the best decisions of my life. Here’s why:
The impeccable Train network
Interlaken has the most punctual train network I have experienced. The trains are frequent, on time and transit to most popular destinations. But the true adventure lies in the trains that go off the beaten track. Imagine taking a risk and hiking through endless snow capped mountains to either side of you, nothing beats the sound of silence, with the only breaking sound being the wind in the trees and the sound of your sneakers on the dirt road.
The Local food
Switzerland is known for its cheese fondue and for good reason! In Interlaken the cheese is all made locally in the mountains from cows frolicking in green pastures. Whilst this seems like something out of a fairytale, there are many tours you can take to visit the local farms where you can meet these gorgeous animals and even have a taste of the local milk produced. Not only does it taste great, but it also supports local farmers and industries!
The list of activities is endless as Switzerland experiences 2 extreme seasons. In summer the weather can reach up to 32 degrees providing for swimming in the lakes, canoeing, hiking, and cycling through the mountains. In the colder seasons, Its all about the SNOW SNOW SNOW!
There are plenty of companies that run casual snowboarding/skiing experiences. Take the rail to the top of Jungfraujoch and enjoy the scenery of the highest peak in Europe! Or opt for a hike – There are many hiking tracks to explore, just take a book, a bottle of water, a map and you’re set for the day.
