City: Albuquerque is a city rich in culture and heritage with sunshine shining (nearly) all year round, and the perfect playground for outdoor activities.
What to do? Attend the hot air balloon festival, one of the most colourful events in America, which puts on a mighty show in early October. It goes for 9-days and there you’ll witness over 500 hot air balloons up in the air – making this one hell of a fiesta.
State: Utah and Arizona border
City: Oljato isn’t exactly a city, but definitely an unmissable landmark if you’re out West.
What to do? Drive through the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park – this infamous red-sand desert road covered in sandstone monoliths that reach up to 1,000 feet is completely and utterly mesmerising.
City: Durango is a cosy little town with world-class attractions, a plethora of outdoor activities and acts as the gateway to the almighty Rocky Mountains.
What to do? White water rafting, horseback riding, and in winter all the snow fun you can dream of.
What to do? If you’re driving on Route 66, stop-off at the iconic Cadillac ranch, created in 1974 by an art-hippie group known as Ant farm. This colourful public art installation features upside down spray painted Cadillacs. It’s been around for decades – much longer than most cars you’ll see on the road.
City: Memphis is the birth place of the blues, rock n’ roll, and soul music. If you’re an Elvis lover, this one’s for you.
What to do? Visit a museum rocking the best Elvis memorabilia in the world. Head to Beale street to experience the heart and soul of blues music, with live music clubs located left, right and centre. The National Civil Rights museum is worth a visit as it marks Martin Luther King, Jr’s assassination in 1968.
City: New Orleans is nicknamed “Big Easy” and notoriously renowned for its vibrant nightlife, culture and of course – live music. The Jazz scene will fill your soul and capture your imagination, and make you realise you might just be a jazz fan after all.
What to do? Walk the streets or do a walking tour to get a sense of this city’s hustle and bustle. Delve deep into the city’s culinary delights and try the three most iconic dishes: Gumbo, Jambalaya and po-boy.
