Some of Thailand’s biggest drawcards are their incredible islands. The second largest of these, and perhaps one of the most well-renowned, is Koh Samui. With its white sand beaches and turquoise blue waters, it’s easy to understand why millions of visitors flock to this island paradise every year.
Even though you’lllove soaking up the Thai sun with a coconut drink in-hand, Koh Samui is so much more than just a beach holiday. Home to one of the biggest Buddha Statues in the south, visit the island’s famous Big Buddha at Wat Phra Yai. Spend some time in the temple learning about the significance of the statue, before exploring some of the other temples on the island. Our favourite? The Maenam Chinese Temple. Its unique Chinese-style architecture gives a nod to the Chinese heritage of the locals. This is also the place to go to celebrate Chinese New Year in late January and early February.
For lovers of the outdoors, Koh Samui serves up tonnes of natural wonders that will satisfy your adventure cravings. Make your way south of Nathon Town to see the amazing Na Muang Waterfalls. Trek through the jungle to get to reach these two beauties, where you’ll see 80-metre-high falls and swim in their natural watering holes. If you’d prefer to hike along the beach, make your way around Lamai beach to find the famous Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks. Don’t worry about not being able to find them – it’s hard to miss these phallic formations.
Art lovers, grab a tuk tuk and head up the hills of Koh Samui to the Secret Buddha Garden. What began as a private landscaping project has turned into one of the most-beloved public art spaces on the island.
If all this exploring gets you hungry, Koh Samui boasts so many amazing restaurants that will keep you satisfied. From phat thai kung to gang keow wan, tuck into some of the island’s best Thai food. With so many things to do in Koh Samui, you’ll soak up so much more than just some sun rays on this incredible island.
