Over 2018 already? Well welcome to Kampung Pelangi, an Indonesian village so bright, so covered in rainbows and so good to look upon that all your January blues will be chased away!
Dubbed the rainbow village, or Insta-village, the town on Indonesia’s central Javanese coast is actually the brainchild of the local government and local school principal Slamet Widodo. Seeking to attract tourists to the area, they gave the village a facelift by repainting all the buildings in blinding colour.
The inspiration for creating an Instagrammable town came from others on the island nation, Principal Widodo told the Jakarta Post: “The idea to create Kampung Pelangi came after we saw the beauty of Kampung Warna-Warni and Kampung Tridi in Malang, and later Kampung Kali Code in Yogyakarta. Hopefully Kampung Pelangi will be the biggest one in Indonesia and offer a new tourist attraction in Semarang.”
They also got artists to paint selfie-ready 3D murals around town and it’s been a hit ever since. Best $23,000 ever spent? We’ll say!
Naturally, people are high-key obsessed with the vibrant village and flock there to take happy snaps of all the colourful scenes.
