If “Visit Borneo” isn’t already on your bucket list, it’s time to fix that. This 9-day Borneo itinerary in Malaysia takes you deep into the heart of Sabah, Sarawak and other island gems to showcase epic Borneo attractions (sometimes on river safaris!) that are packed with rarer than rare wildlife encounters, lush jungles, unbeatable island views and so much more. Jaws will be dropped, people.
Day 1 & 2: Kuching & Bako National Park
Your Borneo trip kicks off in Kuching, the vibrant capital of Sarawak (also affectionately called Cat City!). It’s known as one of the most charming places to visit in Malaysia . Here, you’ll wander the quaint streets, soak in the riverside views, and dive into the local street food scene. Think laksa and delicious satay skewers.
On day 2, you can take a boat day-trip to Bako National Park, a must-see among Borneo attractions. It’s home to the iconic proboscis monkeys (the monkeys with unique noses!), and is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Trek through lush trails, marvel at mangroves, and maybe even spot a bearded pig (they’re cuter than they sound, promise). It’s like you just starred in your own nature documentary.
Day 3: Semenggoh Orangutan Centre & Kota Kinabalu
Start the day at the Semenggoh Orangutan Centre, where you’ll meet Malaysian Borneo’s most famous residents – rescued orangutans who are thriving in this protected reserve. You’ll watch them swing through the jungle, see them grab bananas for lunch and even learn all about why conservation matters.
Next, it’s a flight to Kota Kinabalu (to save time!), the lively capital of Sabah – also a gateway to some of the best things to do in Borneo. It offers gorgeous coastal views, incredible seafood, and a laid-back vibe. It’s a highlight on any Borneo itinerary.

Day 4: Free day in Kota Kinabula
Today, you call the shots! Feeling adventurous? Head to Ara Dinawan Island for a day of kayaking and snorkeling. Think crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, and enough sun to make your friends at home jealous. Not a water baby? No problem. How about a bike tour of Borneo’s countryside, where you’ll pedal through charming villages, lush landscapes, meet the local Dusun people and learn about rubber farming?
Day 5: Sandakan Memorial Park and Turtle Hatching on Selingan Island
Today, your Borneo trip takes a reflective turn with a visit to the Sandakan Memorial Park, a beautifully maintained site honouring the region’s WWII history. Then it’s time to switch gears with an unforgettable stop at Selingan Island. By nightfall, you’ll witness the magic of turtle hatching, as baby turtles make their brave crawl to the ocean and possibly even see a mother turtle laying her eggs! It’s wholesome, rare, heartwarming, and a total bucket-list moment.

Day 6: Puu Jih Shih Temple & Rainforest Discovery Centre
Kick off the day with a visit to the serene Puu Jih Shih Buddhist Temple, perched on a hill with panoramic views of Sandakan and the sea. It’s a perfect place to soak up some zen vibes before diving back into adventure at the Rainforest Discovery Centre. Here you’ll get to walk among the treetops on canopy trails, spot vibrant birds, and learn about Borneo’s incredible biodiversity. It’s a dream come true for your inner nature nerd.
Day 7: Sepilok
Today is all about wildlife conservation. First up: the adorable residents of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Watch these tiny (and surprisingly agile) bears in their natural habitat as they climb, forage, and generally steal the show. Then, visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to meet rescued orangutans and learn how they’re being prepared for a life back in the wild.
Day 8: Kinabatangan
Rise and shine – it’s safari time! Today you can go on an early morning Kinabatangan River safari. The wildlife here is next-level, with sightings of rare monkeys, hornbills, and gibbons almost guaranteed. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of pygmy elephants enjoying a morning splash. It’s nature at its most magical (and a must-have on your Borneo itinerary!).
