TRAVEL IN LIMA

The former home of the indigenous Limas, ancient Incas and the Spanish invaders, it’s easy to see why so many civilisations fell in love with Lima. Surrounded by mountains and the nearby Pacific Ocean, Lima has played a key role in Latin American history. Discover the story of colonial Peru by walking around the Old Town of this colourful capital. Marvel at the incredible architecture of some of its most famous buildings, including the Basilica of San Francisco and the Presidential Palace. Walk on the city’s former bullfighting ring at Plaza Bolivar, before learning more about this Spanish sport in the Museo Taurino.

Go even further back and discover Lima’s indigenous routes. Head over to the district of Miraflores, where you’ll be wowed by Huaca Pucllana, the ancient pyramid that protrudes out of the hillside. Discover how the indigenous Limas mastered irrigation way back, between 100 – 650 AD, before seeing relics of the Wari people at the site’s archaeological museum. Learn more about the history and achievements of Peru’s indigenous populations at the National Museum of the Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Peru, where you can also snap a picture of a life-size replica of Machu Picchu.

While its historic monuments are serious drawcards, there are also heaps of adventurous things to do in Lima. Climb the hill of Cerro San Cristobal, Lima’s mini-mountain, for amazing views of the sprawling city below. If you’ve got a strong stomach and can tolerate small spaces, go underground to explore catacombs of the Monastery of San Francisco. Built on top of Lima’s pre-Columbian cemeteries, you’ll find tens of thousands of bodily remains arranged in interesting patterns and formations. If you’re hungry for more gore, head to the Museum of Congress and the Inquisition, which gives graphic recounts of how the Spanish colonisers tortured the indigenous peoples who refused to accept Catholicism.

When it comes to food, Lima’s amazing restaurants and street vendors have got your back. Wow your taste buds with tangy ceviche, smoky slow-cooked guinea pig and buttery giant Amazonian snails.

With so much to see and, bite off more than you can chew in Lima Peru.
