Melbourne is one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting holidaymakers and backpackers alike. A city rich with history and culture, there’s a never-ending list of things to see and do in Melbourne. But it’s also the ideal spot to destress, unwind and reset if you’re feeling under the weather.
While some travellers prefer a fast-paced, jam-packed itinerary, it’s important to consider destinations where one can slow down and prioritise relaxation. This can help decrease the chance of burnout and lessen the effects of stress on our bodies and minds.
If you’re feeling deflated, exhausted and fatigued, there are an abundance of things to do in Melbourne to help you rest while also making the most of your holiday. Here are 9 relaxing things to do on your next city escape in Melbourne.
1. Start your morning at Fieldwork Coffee
Fieldwork Coffee is a “modern Australian micro-roastery” prioritising sustainable practice and ethically sourced ingredients. Kickstart your morning with a hot bevvy (dairy alternatives available) and a fresh pastry before heading out for some sightseeing. Fieldwork Coffee has two central locations – in the bustling Degraves Street thoroughfare, and along St Georges Road.
2. Enjoy some theatre
The Melbourne CBD is home to one of the best theatre districts in Australia. Grab a drink before heading to an evening performance, or catch the sunset on the Yarra River after a cozy matinee. Visiting in April? Check out shows and skits at the Melbourne Comedy Festival.
3. Go thrifting in Greater Melbourne
Melbourne is a goldmine for preloved fashion, with op shops situated throughout the inner and outer suburbs. So, it’s impossible to visit without a quick second-hand adventure. On the weekends, check out the thrift scene at Fitzroy Market where you’ll find vintage tees and popular brands, in addition to atmospheric, live music. If you’re looking to escape the city, take the train south to Mentone and visit the colourful, influencer-centric Hunter Markets – entry is just $2.

4. Visit the State Library of Victoria
The State Library of Victoria has been lending books since 1854 and was one of the first free libraries in the world. Even if you’re not a die-hard bookworm like myself, the La Trobe Reading Room is still worth a visit. You can also meander around their permanent and temporary exhibitions. On sunny days, relax on the lawn out front where buskers perform in the plentiful.
5. Spend the day in St. Kilda
After a few days in the Melbourne CBD, you might start craving a change of pace. Catch a tram or bus to the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda and take a peaceful walk along the esplanade. There are a plethora of local coffee spots and small businesses to visit and support. In the warmer months, you can sunbathe at the beach and even take a quick dip.

Are you an art fanatic? Or maybe you’re looking for the perfect rainy-day activity? The National Gallery of Victoria is Australia’s oldest art museum, founded in 1861, and hosts a variety of permanent and temporary exhibitions. You can take a free walking tour to learn more about the artwork on display or take a solo walk through the halls. Across the road, take a wander through the Royal Botanical Gardens.
7. Enjoy a trip down the Yarra River
The Yarra River is the iconic, peaceful centrepiece of Great Melbourne. Jump on a Yarra River sightseeing cruise and catch some unique views of the city from the water. In the evening, you can watch the sunset while the city sparkles to life.

If you’ve got a car handy, consider driving away from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne and head south for the picturesque coastline along the Mornington Peninsula. There are plenty of quaint seaside towns to explore as well as easy hikes along the beach. No car? Check out an organised tour.
