When we’re in the need for some wanderlust inspiration we turn to Canadian photographer Jordan Dyck’s Instagram feed, so we knew that she was the perfect person to capture the beautiful scenery and culture of Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.
In 2016 she set off to explore Southeast Asia on her own, and here’s what she told us about her amazing Asian Adventure:
What was your Asian Adventure group like?
Wild, and incredible people. I met some lifelong friends on this trip, from Australia to England to Portugal to my home country of Canada – and I’ll never forget the memories we made together. Some of my best memories of travelling have been with this group.
What was your favourite city and why?
My favourite city was absolutely Chiang Rai. There’s nothing more fulfilling than getting to interact with local culture, and learn other peoples’ traditions. We visited a village where I met a young Akha tribe member. It was one of my favourite photographs of the trip, and is a memory I’ll hold special for the rest of my life.
What was the best day of the trip?
The best day was probably the waterfall trip in Laos to Kuang Si Waterfall in Luang Prabang. We had an endless amount of fun jumping into the lagoon and playing in the water, and finished the night off with drinks and exploring Luang Prabang. Plus our hotel had a ridiculously fun pool that we used well into the night and early morning.
What surprised you most about this trip?
How much we were able to cover in such a short period of time. It was absolutely surreal, and we were moving and touring for upwards of 12 hours some days.
If you had to describe your trip in 3 words, what would they be?
Daring, wild & free.
What’s your favourite photo from this trip?
I mentioned this earlier, but a portrait of a young Akha. In Northern Thailand, and especially in more remote areas – it’s rare that people are able to see in the moment photographs of themselves. After I took this photograph, I shared my screen with the mother and child and to see their eyes and faces light up in wonder still brings a smile to my face unlike any other memory I have.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to take this trip in 2017?
Never say no. Do everything to the fullest, and think about the rest later. No regrets.
