Whether you are happily employed or on the job hunt, an updated resume is just as valuable (and this also includes your LinkedIn). People tend to think that once they’ve gotten the gig the work is over - no one likes tending to their resume (myself included), so it ends up in a random folder on your laptop gathering dust. Sound about right?
Well my friends, time to change the habit of a lifetime, as keeping your resume up to date is beneficial in oh so many ways...
You'll see the career goals you've achieved
Being able to see how far you’ve come – your biggest projects and most sought-after skills. This allows you to refocus your goals moving forward. Additionally, this gives you the chance to acknowledge your strengths and identify gaps in your skills. This will give you the opportunity to grow and develop within your career.
You'll always be available for Opportunities
An up-to-date resume is great when recruiters come sniffing around, promotions within your workplace become available, or if it is award season within your industry. A resume essentially shows you off, and you want to be in the best position possible when these opportunities come knocking.
You won't forget the important details
You may be working on a big, exciting project at work, or been given more responsibility within your job description. These are things you’ll want to use to enhance your resume. When you do get around to adding them it is likely you won’t remember the specifics – this will dilute the experience that ends up on the paper. Instead, add them straight away – highlighting the key points before you forget the fundamental details.
You'll always be prepared for the Worst-case scenario
Not a fun one to think about, but definitely important. The workplace is volatile – constantly changing and reforming. With this uncertainty there is always the chance that you’ll end up back on the job hunt. If your resume is right ready to go, you’ll waste no time in starting the search immediately.
