For some reason, as a society we’re all obsessed with amassing wealth. There’s the old saying that money won’t keep you warm at night, but more than that, it won’t even bring you happiness. The three key pillars to a joyful life are: having someone to love, something that gives you purpose, and something to look forward to. See? No money to be seen.
Achieving happiness is something countless books, podcasts and 2:00 am talk shows are dedicated to, but we think if we can break it down into these three boxes, we’ll all be well on our way to smiling through the commute. Where does travel come in, you wonder? Well, travel can help you climb to the top of all three pillars...
Someone To Love
We’re sure you already have someone to love, but why wouldn’t you want a few more peeps in your crew? That just means more happiness. Cherishing people outside of your family or romantic union is important too, as it gives you stronger ties to a community and encourages empathy for others. The friendships you make while travelling are next level, thanks to the experiences you share. Ask anyone who has been on a Contiki and they’ll tell you they’ve made friends for life.
Something That Gives You Purpose
Having something to do everyday is a driving force of happiness, and doing a task with purpose is one of the keys to a happy life. We can’t tell you what your purpose is ~exactly~ but we believe one of the best ways to find your bliss is through travel. If the same old routine at home hasn’t given you your “Ah ha!” moment, step outside the box to Argentina (or wherever you heart leads) and you might just discover what your were put on this earth to do…
Something To Look Forward To
Having hope in the future allows for a deeper, more lasting happiness because it doesn’t rely upon the here and now, or circumstances that could change. You can bring this into your own life by setting goals… travel goals! A study by the NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences found that pre-vacation planning led to a nice healthy spike of pleasure in those surveyed and that lasted right up until the trip itself!
All roads lead to travel...
Obviously travel isn’t free, but travel does support the three key pillars of happiness… so why not save for it? Plus, money is cool and all, but let’s face it, it’s useless unless we spend it. So don’t chase money, chase happiness. Chase experiences.
