When I say I’ve been to Philadelphia, one of the first things people ask me is, “did you have a Philly Cheesesteak?” Yes, but that wasn’t why I went in the first place. Rocky was that reason.
Growing up watching Rocky movies and later participating in martial arts myself, there was no way I was missing a trip to Philadelphia. How could I possibly resist the temptation to run up those infamous steps?
I was surprised at just how much this city has to offer, so here are some of my top recommendations of things to do in Philadelphia:
1. Explore the Independence National Historical Park
Made up of the Independence Visitor Centre, Liberty Bell Center, Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Franklin court and many more buildings – walking through this park and learning all about different pivotal parts of US history is all free. One could spend a whole day immersing themselves in the history here.

2. Check out Reading Terminal Market
America’s oldest farmers’ market is home to an array of produce, homewares, flowers and even a wide variety of restaurants, all under one roof.
3. Visit the Philadelphia Zoo
These days Zoos are quite controversial, however it was fantastic to see America’s first zoo doing so much for animal and environmental conservation. Through a range of different educational and conservation programs and systems, they are helping many rare and endangered animal have a chance at survival. With over 1,300 animals, this could definitely be another full day adventure.

4. Go to Franklin Square
With a magnificent fountain at its centre, one of the original squares of Philadelphia is now an attraction in itself. Carousel rides, mini-golf, burgers and more bring over 1 million visitors to the park each year.
5. Hit the museums
Philadelphia has a difference museum for everyone in your travel squad. The Franklin Institute is an amazing science museum, which I personally could have spent a whole day at, with an area dedicated to touring exhibitions such as Pompei. One of the largest art museums in the USA, Philadelphia Museum of Art calls Philadelphia home. Also, no surprises that the world’s only museum dedicated to the National Constitution is found in this city. And one for the kid’s, “Please Touch Museum” teaches children by a variety of hand’s on and special effects exhibits.
