The most common Contiki stereotypes, debunked

Friends jumping off boat into water having fun in Europe

If you’ve ever mentioned Contiki to someone, chances are you’ve heard the same reaction: “Oh, that’s the party tour, right?”

While Contiki definitely knows how to throw a good night out, the idea that every trip is just a rolling party bus packed with young 20-somethings and late nights is seriously outdated.

In reality, Contiki has evolved massively. From small-group adventures and ski trips to food tours, festival experiences and unique trips designed with the help of local guides, there’s way more to Contiki than just bus trips and partying.

So if you’ve been curious about group travel but held back because of the stereotypes, it’s time for a quick reality check.

We’ve debunked some of the classic Contiki stereotypes from over the years.

And we’ll fill you in on some of the amazing things we do today that you may not even realise!

1. Contiki is just one big party

Yes, some trips have legendary nightlife. But that’s far from the whole story.

Contiki now offers a huge mix of travel styles depending on what kind of experience you want.

Whether you want to be island hopping, doing small group trips, active adventures including hiking and skiing, tailoring your trips to 27-35s, embarking on train travel, or going on a festival experience, there’s way more options than you probably even realised.

In other words, the vibe depends on the trip you choose.

If nightlife is your thing, great! If you’d rather spend your days hiking, exploring cities, or discovering hidden local spots, there’s a trip for that too. Or you can combine the two, of course!

2. It’s only for people who want to do a gap year in Europe

Sure, Contiki is actually a great way to see Europe: affordable, fun, and stress-free because we do the organising for you. If it’s your first visit, it takes a looot of pressure off to have someone doing the legwork for you.

But it’s not just big, 40-day trips where you see Europe from a bus. There’s a trip and vibe for everyone, whether you’re 18 or 35.

Whether you’re on your gap year, a young professional looking for an annual leave to remember, a solo traveller keen to meet new people, travelling with your besties or your significant other, or wanting to break up your own planned trip and meet new people, Contiki’s wide range of trips have you covered.

From eating your way through Vietnam, hiking Nepal, sailing through Indonesia or safaris in Africa, there’s a whole range of trips outside of the Euro Summer.

And if you only have a week to spare for holidaying, don’t worry: we’ve got that covered too!

3. There’s no time for cultural experiences

Another common assumption is that group travel means you’re just ticking off tourist hotspots and only embarking on bus tours or walking tours of ancient cities.

But, we’re in the 2020s now, not 1960.

Contiki trips are built around local experiences and immersive moments, from cooking classes with local chefs, to wine tasting in regional vineyards, to hidden gem neighbourhood explorations, cycling tours, travelling by train just like the locals would, and our Make Travel Matter initiatives.

One day you could be setting your OOO, and the next you could be feeding reindeers in Norway, enjoying a traditional Sámi evening dinner and learning all about their beliefs from the Sámi reindeer herders themselves.

4. You have zero freedom or downtime

Wrong!

You’re not going to be forced to party, skydive, white-water raft or do anything you’re not comfortable with. While there’s many group activities and add ons, everyone will always understand too if it’s just been a big day and you need to hit the sack by 8pm.

The trips are designed to balance activities and sightseeing so you do get free time to explore independently or opt-in to things.

5. The only mode of transport is buses

Wrong again!

From dedicated train travel trips, to sailing trips, and trips that include all modes of transport from bullet trains to flights, sure you may be on a bus or two from time-to-time. But it’s not the only way you’ll have to travel, trust us.

6. You’re too old for Contiki

Contiki is well-known for tailoring trips for 18-35s, but sometimes people hold the misconception by the time they hit their mid-late twenties they’ve aged out of Contiki.

From special trips designated for those aged 27-25, to ones for 35-45-year-olds, you’re not actually too old for Contiki at all.
