Quick vibe check: who’s actually thriving right now? If 2026 hasn’t hit right yet, you may be in need of a little holiday inspiration. And it looks like the 2026 World Happiness Report has the answers for us.
If you’ve followed the report over the years, it won’t surprise you that Nordic countries consistently rank among the happiest in the world… and it’s not just because they prioritise saunas over hustle culture.
Based on life satisfaction data from the Gallup World Poll, the report ranks countries like Finland, Denmark and Iceland having a more positive mindset due to social support, income, freedom, trust, and life expectancy.

The alarming trend from the 2026 World Happiness Report
While we are here to talk happy countries, The 2026 World Happiness Report does reveal a worrying shift: younger generations are reporting lower happiness levels than ever before, with social media playing a pretty major role.
Constant comparison, algorithm-fuelled perfection, and the pressure to curate a life that’s always “on” are quietly chipping away at people’s self-worth. Instead of connection, many Gen Z and Millennials are finding themselves caught in a loop of digital burnout.
The result? A generation more connected than ever, yet increasingly lonelier, more anxious, and, well, burned out.
So without further ado, here are the happiest countries, just in case you need some travel inspo
Finland
For the ninth year in a row, Finland has stayed booked, busy, and emotionally stable. In human form, Finland is always hydrated and moisturised.
What makes Finland so damn happy? Things like free education, universal healthcare, and trust in government has helped the population maintain a stable lifestyle.
As one Redditor put it, “We are well supported and don’t have much to complain about. Things work well, are on time, and mostly affordable. If something goes wrong we won’t fall too far. Because we don’t have to worry about so many things we are free to take chances and work on things we love. Life is good here.”
Iceland
The Iceland population may be small, but their main character energy is only growing. Another consistent ranker in the happiest countries, Iceland’s strong sense of community, universal healthcare, high gender equality and strong social safety and low crime rates keep them thriving.
But as a whole? People just simply show up for each other and the country is also just so damn beautiful.
“From home, from work, it’s very easy to get to a national park or open spaces where we can hike, walk by the river, coast or lakes,” Hrund Gunnsteinsdóttir, author of book InnSæi: Heal, Revive and Reset with the Icelandic Art of Intuition, told BBC.
Sounds pretty beautiful to us.
Denmark
Danes also benefit from free healthcare and just as importantly, a healthy work-life balance.
Fun fact: the Danish community has a concept known as ‘hygge’ (pronounced ‘hooga’) which is basically about taking time away from the daily rush to just simply be. Whether it’s being around your loved ones, appreciating life’s simple pleasures, and embracing coziness and contentment, the word dates all the way back to the 1800s. It’s not just a cultural concept for the Danes, it’s a way of life.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica has been creeping steadily up the happiness list and for good reason: the country is continuing to prioritise wellbeing over burnout.
Costa Rica famously abolished its military in 1949 and reinvested funds into healthcare, education and environmental protection, and this move is paying absolute dividends all these years later.
The strong community culture, slower pace of life, and access to nature means people feel a lot happier. It truly is the personification of going outside to touch some grass and remembering that connection trumps all.
Sweden
Sweden is also a country that ranks often as one of the happiest, and the Swedes have the art of balance down. Their term, ‘Lagom’ roughly translates to ‘in moderation’ or ‘just the right amount’. Overconsumption is frowned upon, no one’s winning awards for staying late back in the office, and overall it’s all about the feeling of ‘enough’ over the pressure of ‘excess’.
Once again, universal healthcare, as well as top-notch parental leave policies, subsidised childcare and respecting personal time (aka having that work-life balance, because of that moderation!) has Sweden proving you can be ambitious and productive without burning yourself to the ground.
Norway
We told you there was a pattern of Nordic countries on this list! From excellent work-life balance, high trust in institutions and strong economic security, there’s no denying Norway is not only one of the prettiest countries worldwide – they’re also pretty damn happy.
“The atmosphere [is] honestly one of my favourite things about Norway. Everything just feels gentle and calm and beautiful,” one person said on Reddit, after relocating from Germany to Norway. “I genuinely think nature-wise, Norway is the most beautiful country on earth. I often find myself at a loss for words because of how gorgeous it is.”
The Netherlands
You’ve probably picked up on all the underlying themes here in the list of happiest countries and the good people of The Netherlands also appreciate a very healthy work-life balance, high quality of life, high economic security and cultural emphasis on independence.
“Compared to other places we have very little reason to complain,” one person said on Reddit. “We have social security, eduction, good healthcare, we can do and say en believe everything we want, it’s safer than most places, no war, hunger or high criminal rates.”
“It’s safe and easy to get around without the need for a car. There are loads of jobs which provide great work/balance and pay fairly well,” someone else pointed out. “I have loads of opportunities for hobbies and travel. It definitely has its drawbacks but for me there is nowhere I would rather live. I actually left and after year away I had to come back.”
Sounds pretty convincing to us!
