Hot Takes: Why winter trips are about to steal Europe’s summer spotlight

Peak season used to mean one thing: a steaming hot Euro summer, big crowds, and a chaotic group chat attempting to coordinate 12 annual leave schedules to go Mediterranean island hopping.

But the new era of travel isn’t about squeezing everything into the same two summer months as everyone else. It’s about timing your trip for maximum vibes, minimal chaos, and a whole bunch of perfect shots that don’t just belong on Insta: you’ll need to make a whole damn scrapbook.

We’ve done the European heatwaves. We’ve sweated through crowded, rattly bus rides into Positano. We’ve downed limoncello spritzes slightly too fast while aggressively fanning ourselves in the shade. We’ve embraced the chaos of squeezing into twin rooms on boats, only to end up sleeping on the deck anyway.

It was all very character building. But if you’re ready to up the ante when it comes to your next trip and ditch the heat rash in 2026, we have a suggestion: stop chasing the sun… and start chasing peak season.

Snow season is the new holiday plot twist

Hot take: peak season isn’t about a summer escape anymore.

It’s about timing your trip when experiences feel the most iconic. Maybe that’s days on the slopes and music festivals by night, Christmas lights in historic cities, or the unbeatable atmosphere of a mountain town in full swing.

So maybe 2026 will be the year that you shift your cal and your holiday mindset, because some destinations are actually at their best when the temperature drops.

Euro summer is just a bit typical now

There’ll always be a special place for Euro summer in my heart, don’t get me wrong. But the classic summer circuit will be there, waiting for you to come back one day. The same beaches, same queues, same “accidentally spent €18 on sparkling water” moments can wait a year. Plus, your wallet will thank you even more for not needing to book an overpriced sun bed.

Winter has been quietly working away in the background, building a reputation for delivering something a little different.

Think less chaotic crowds, sunny snow days, mulled wine, hot chocolates, and a new winter wardrobe… it may just be the taste of whimsy and the dopamine spike we all need.

Snow season is chaotic good

There’s something about a scenic winter wonderland that feels like stepping into a cosy, heartfelt movie scene.

Maybe it’s the altitude making us all a little loopy. Maybe it’s getting temporarily mesmerised by a flickering fire. Maybe it’s the universal understanding that everyone is just doing their best not to fall over in the snow.

Either way, snow trips bring out the fun side of travel. Think spontaneous dance floors at après, chatting with strangers on the chairlift, and bonding moments that happen faster when everyone is slightly out of their comfort zone.

The vibes are high, the laughs are louder, and nobody is pretending they didn’t stack it on the beginner slope. It’s just pure acceptance.

And it may even save you money

Who amongst us hasn’t spend a little too much on a summer trip because, when you’re there, prices and exchange rates become a future you problem?

Winter trips can deliver serious value when you consider how much is packed into one destination. Accommodation, activities, nightlife, scenery… often all within the same city or mountain town.

But let’s say you don’t want to hit the slopes. Did you know a Paris hotel room can be roughly half the price earlier in the year as compared to June and July? And maybe 10x more romantic?

Travelling outside of the traditional peak months can unlock better availability and more choice, which means less compromising on the experiences you actually want.

Plus, there’s many slightly off-grid locations that are just as scenic and still well-kept secrets. Think Bulgaria, Northern Hokkiado in Japan, and let’s not forget New Zealand and its long winter sports season from June through to October.

There’s a lot of adventure to be had!

When a destination is in season, you can feel it. Winter trips aren’t just about skiing, so don’t stress if your idea of hitting the slopes is falling face first into the snow.

Think ice skating, scenic train rides, thermal spas, winter hiking, festive markets, alpine coasters, live music, Christmas markets… the kind of activities that make you feel like you’re properly doing something, not just passing through.

Plus, Contiki has some pretty damn cool trips that include all of the action for you, so you don’t have to worry about planning the logistics. Our Ski New Zealand trip for example, includes your Snow Machine festival ticket so you can experience a full-blown music playground stacked with artists from around the world, in scenery so picture-perfect it could make you cry. If you weren’t so damn happy that is.

Winter travel has a different kind of aesthetic

If summer is golden hour, winter is cinematic.

Snow-covered rooftops. Steaming mugs of mulled wine. Cable cars disappearing into the clouds. Cosy restaurants that feel like you’ve stumbled into a postcard. Sleek snow fits and oversized knits.

The atmosphere is the cherry on top, with the whole vibe well and truly alive with people who are all there for the same reason: to make the most out of this very moment. No sweaty, crowded buses in sight.

Have we got you convinced yet?
