Getting to know: six-two global editor Ginny Copestake

Ginny Copestake sits on the edge of a cliff overlooking a canyon.

The day job: Content Manager, six-two Mumma, and the person always lurking in the background of most videos.

The place I call home:

London

How long have I been writing for six-two:

Since the beginning. We launched six-two in 2015 with one clear aim – inspire others to see the world by writing about all of the incredible things within it. Back then we were a team of 2, now we’re a team of 7, and I couldn’t be more proud of the journey we’ve taken to get to this point.

How did I get into writing:

Reading was one of my biggest passions growing up, so studying English Literature at university was the obvious choice. After graduating I originally intended to work within book publishing, but when a role in marketing for a global entertainment company came up, I knew I had to take it.

But over time and hundreds of thousands of written words later the confidence grows, as does your writing talent. Writing is like learning to ride a bike – once you can do it, you’ll always be able to do it. You might feel a little rusty sometimes, but with practice the talent will always come back.

My favourite topic to write about:

Self development. One of the topics I feel most passionately about within my work is helping people to realise the transformative power of travel. I don’t think there’s anything else in the world that can change you or impact you as much as travel can. All cliches aside, it really is the one thing that develops you most as an individual. It gives you confidence, it makes you realise how fortunate you are, it heals a broken heart – it’s the ultimate form of medicine for just about everything.

My favourite travel destination:

India. I visited for the first time earlier this year for work and it absolutely blew me away in every sense. It’s so overwhelming and takes a little getting used to, but once you understand how things work (or don’t work I should say, India lives by its own rules), you begin to realise what a complex, serene and utterly beautiful country it is.

My best travel memory:

Roadtripping the East Coast of Australia with my (now) fiance. I’d just made the very impulsive decision to quit London life and move down under – something I thought I’d never do. We bought a car, loaded it up with a tent and some supplies, and hit the road from Sydney to Darwin. Ultimate summer freedom, set to the sound track of Two Door Cinema Club. Take me back!

My advice for someone looking to get into travel writing:

Don’t assume you need to travel extensively to write about travel. Start small – try to see your local city from a new perspective, or take a weekend trip somewhere new. If you feel like you’ve learnt something or seen something you reckon others might like, write about it!

There are so many opportunities for aspiring writers to get their work out there, and our community contributor program is one of them. Give us some insider tips on your local town or city, or share a story of a travel experience that really resonated with you. You don’t need to be the next JK Rowling, we’re all about giving people their first helping hand into the travel writing world, offering a platform to get your first piece of writing work published.

The Contiki trips I loved the most:

My most recent trip to Scotland blew me away with the incredible scenery. Eternal India was incredible on every level. Kiwiana Panorama as New Zealand is just outrageous.
