Kiwi Encounter, Rotorua
Located in Rotorua on NZ’s North Island, Kiwi Encounter is the largest and most successful kiwi hatching facility in the world. Working to grow the population numbers of New Zealand’s famed and endangered brown kiwi bird, the centre successfully incubates and hatches kiwi eggs from all across the North island, whilst also acting as a research facility.
Contiki groups visit the centre as an included activity with all proceeds going back to the project, and in 2017 (and in partnership with TreadRight) we also sponsored an incubation chamber and weighing scales for the facility.
With branches across New Zealand, Eat my Lunch is a social enterprise project that allows you to buy a lunch for a child who would otherwise go without. It works like this - for every lunch our travellers buy for themselves in each of the EML locations our trips pass through (Auckland, Wellington & Christchurch), another lunch is made for a child in need. In just 3 years, EML has provided lunches for over 1 million children & schools, and we’re hoping to make that number even greater.
