Kiwi Encounter, Rotorua

Kiwi Encounter, Rotorua

Located in Rotorua on NZ’s North Island, Kiwi Encounter is the largest and most successful kiwi hatching facility in the world. Working to grow the population numbers of New Zealand’s famed and endangered brown kiwi bird, the centre successfully incubates and hatches kiwi eggs from all across the North island, whilst also acting as a research facility.

Contiki groups visit the centre as an included activity with all proceeds going back to the project, and in 2017 (and in partnership with TreadRight) we also sponsored an incubation chamber and weighing scales for the facility.

DO IT ON

Eat my Lunch

1 in 4 Kiwi kids (approx. 290,000) live in poverty and thousands go to school without lunch every day. With branches across New Zealand, Eat my Lunch is a social enterprise project that allows you to buy a lunch for a child who would otherwise go without. It works like this - for every lunch our travellers buy for themselves in each of the EML locations our trips pass through (Auckland, Wellington & Christchurch), another lunch is made for a child in need. On trips that spend time in Auckland, we also provide an EML-supplied breakfast, with each one giving another lunch to a child in need. In just 3 years, EML has provided lunches for over 1.4 million children & schools, and we’re hoping to make that number even greater.

HEART PARCELS, WELLINGTON

Heart Parcels is a non-profit organisation founded by Parris Quinn, Contiki's 2019 Changemaker, providing weekly nourishing, hot meals and tasty desserts to the homeless community living on the streets in Wellington, New Zealand. Alongside the meals, Heart Parcels also provides warm clothing, blankets and toiletries gifted from the local community. On Contiki's New Zealand trips, travellers visit a local Wellington cafe and are treated to a brownie created by Heart Parcels, with all proceeds from the brownies going to feeding the homeless in Wellington. They're met by Parris or one of her associates, who talk more about the project and what they do, and - if they want to - are invited to help Parris hand out hot meals.
