Having Your Cake and Eating it Too While Abroad
Our palates seem to be open to so many different types of cakes, cookies, and confections while we’re traveling. Feast your eyes on five of the following sweet treats from around the world!
Ahh, the egg custard tart. With a flaky crust, and a sweet custard filling that is burnt a la creme brulee, these Portuguese delights can be found not only in Europe, but also flooding the streets in China!
Pastel de tres leches or “three milks” cake is a sponge cake made of – you guessed it – three types of milk: condensed milk, evaporated milk, and fresh milk or fresh cream. It’s consistency can be likened to bread pudding, dense but sweet and many other countries have different variations of this cake.
The ubiquitous macarons – not to be confused with the ‘macaroons‘ which is a coconut pastry, the French pastry is a sweet confectionery made with egg whites, icing sugar, granulated sugar, almond powder and food coloring.
Originating in Spain, these dulce de leche sandwich cookies or “alfajores” traditionally are made flour, honey, almonds, and several spices. There is a nice balance of sweetness from the dulce de leche filling in conjunction with the biscuits.
Strudel, is a layered and flaky pastry that is usually filled with fruit or cream filling (i.e. apple strudel) and can be served with cream. Traditional Strudel dough is different than Filo dough or puff pastry, which is used in many other parts of the world.
