Patagonia for first-timers: 5 things I wish I knew before my trip

Patagonia is one of the most raw, rugged, and unmissable destinations in South America. Stretching across Chile and Argentina, this region is filled with jaw-dropping national parks, vibrant local cultures, and landscapes that shift dramatically from town to town. To make the most of your time and budget, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are five things I wish I knew before my first trip to Patagonia.

1. The weather changes in a flash

In Patagonia, the weather can shift dramatically in minutes. A peaceful morning walk in Punta Arenas can quickly turn into a wicked windstorm—strong enough to knock over trees and cut the power (yes, I experienced this firsthand). The key is to always be prepared. Pack layers, bring a waterproof jacket, and never assume the sunshine will last. Patagonia’s unpredictability is part of its magic, but only if you’re ready for it.

2. Food options can be limited

Depending on the season, restaurants, shops, and even cafes can close without notice—even if Google Maps or websites say otherwise. I learned this the hard way in El Chaltén when my “quick breakfast run” turned into a hangry hour-long search, only to find a single restaurant open in the whole town. Pro tip: always keep snacks on hand, and don’t assume every village will have a dozen open dining options.

3. Hiking is slicker than it looks

Patagonia’s trails are legendary, with rugged beauty, dramatic peaks, and vistas that feel otherworldly. But don’t underestimate them. On one hike in Argentina, my excitement quickly turned to panic as fellow trekkers gave me concerned looks. Why? Everyone else had crampons—and I didn’t. While a park ranger had told us our shoes were fine, we quickly learned that higher elevations meant icy, slippery conditions. Whether it’s crampons, hiking poles, or simply better grip, make sure your footwear matches the trail.

4. Travel with a guide you can trust

There’s no shortage of tour companies in Patagonia, but many are overpriced, full of hidden costs, and sometimes underwhelming. That’s why I recommend traveling with Contiki. Not only do they handle all the logistics, but they also know the hidden gems, the must-see hikes, and the best ways to experience Patagonia on a budget. With local guides who bring the history and culture to life, traveling with Contiki ensures you’ll get the absolute most out of your time in one of the world’s most extraordinary regions.

5. The bus system is seriously impressive

Before my trip, I dreaded the idea of long bus rides between cities—visions of crowded aisles, stiff seats, and questionable roadside stops filled my mind. But Patagonia’s bus system? A total surprise.

Comfortable reclining seats, free WiFi, and even complimentary coffee service made the ride feel more luxe than stressful. And the best part? It’s budget-friendly and lets you soak in Patagonia’s breathtaking scenery along the way. Honestly, I’d choose the bus again in a heartbeat.

Traveling through Patagonia isn’t always easy—it’s wild, unpredictable, and often humbling. But that’s exactly what makes it unforgettable. With the right preparation, you’ll find yourself hiking among glaciers, sipping coffee on mountain buses, and discovering towns that feel like the edge of the world. If it’s your first trip to Patagonia, know this: it will challenge you, change you, and leave you dreaming of when you can return. Pack smart, stay flexible, and embrace the adventure—you’ll be rewarded with one of the most extraordinary travel experiences on the planet.
