Top tips for driving in Italy

Working as a coach driver for Contiki, I get to wake up in a different beautiful corner of Europe almost every day. It’s an amazing job – full of adventure, views, and let’s be honest, incredible food. But if there’s one country that consistently tests every one of my skills (and patience), it’s Italy.

Italy is a dream destination for many. The scenery is stunning, the people are passionate, and the food… let’s not even start, or I will be here all day. But sat in the  driver’s seat, (especially in a full sized coach), Italy can feel like the final boss in a video game: beautiful, dramatic, and slightly scary.

So if you ever find yourself driving in Italy – whether it’s a car, a van, or a 13-metre Contiki coach – here are six tips that might just save you.

Don’t hesitate!

Confidence is everything on Italian roads. If you hesitate at an intersection or take too long to move, expect a lot of honking horns and Vespa scooters squeezing behind you. Italians drive fast, and with total commitment. Usually the destination is what really counts. If you’re unsure – fake it! Improvise! Looking confident is like almost winning the battle.

Prepare for the unexpected

Expect someone to park in the middle of the street “just for a second”. Expect a pedestrian to step into the road while checking their phone. Expect a Vespa to appear from your blind spot just before you turn. Awareness is your best friend. Eyes everywhere, hands ready, and nerves of steel.

Avoid Italian city centres if possible

Italy’s medieval city centres are so exciting, but they were not designed for Contiki coaches, nor large cars. Narrow streets, tiny roundabouts, and tight corners can turn a short drive into a logistical challenge. Find proper assigned parking, or check designated places before. Trust me, your mirrors (and blood pressure) will be grateful.

Embrace the chaos (but always stay alert)

Italian driving might seem crazy, but it’s more like an organised type of chaos. Once you tune into the rhythm, it somehow starts to make sense. That said, stay sharp. Drive defensively, keep a safe distance (but never leave big gaps – other drivers will squeeze in in no time!), and don’t assume indicators mean anything. They are usually just a suggestion.

Fuel up your body and your shiny motor

Long drives on Italians A1 motorway can be stressful – but nothing changes the vibe like an Italian coffee or a Nutella muffin at Autogrill services. Service stations often have surprisingly good food, and pulling over for a quick espresso can do wonders. Don’t rush – enjoy the journey as much as the destination you take your beloved travellers to!

Let your Contiki Trip Driver do the driving!

Of course, if you’d rather skip the stress and just soak up the views, there’s an easier way: let us drive. Our Contiki coaches powered by biofuel come with experienced drivers (Hey!) who know how to handle Italy’s cities, turns, and traffic with style. You sit back, relax, take a million Instagram selfies– and we’ll make sure you get from A (Venice) to B (maybe Florence tonight?) safely, with a smile on your face!
