Your guide to travelling Banff on a budget

Banff National Park in Canada

Banff, located in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, is a dream destination with towering peaks, turquoise lakes, and endless outdoor adventures. As part of Banff National Park, it offers iconic spots like Lake Louise that attract travellers worldwide. However, it’s not always the kindest to your wallet. Between expensive hotels, pricey excursions, and high-end restaurants, costs can add up fast. But don’t worry! With a little planning and knowing the best time to visit, you can experience the magic of Banff on a budget.

Here’s how!

1. Visit in the shoulder season

The peak season in Banff runs from June through August, with winter’s high season from December to February drawing snow lovers. Both of these times bring larger crowds and higher prices. Instead, aim for the shoulder seasons: spring (April–May) or fall (September–October). You’ll enjoy fewer crowds, lower accommodation rates, and the scenery that is jaw dropping year-round.

2. Stay outside the park

Hotels inside Banff National Park can come with a hefty price tag. Consider staying in Canmore, equally stunning and just a 20-minute drive away, where accommodations are often more budget friendly and perfect for experiencing Banff on a budget.

3. Camp for cheap accommodation

If you’re up for a little adventure, camping is one of the most affordable ways to stay in Banff. Campsites in the park start as low as $23 CAD per night. Be sure to book early, as spots can fill up fast in the summer!

4. Take advantage of free activities

Banff is full of incredible free activities, including:

Taking advantage of these free activities is one of the best ways to enjoy Banff on a budget, and leave more room in your wallet for other adventures.

9. Ski on a budget

Banff is famous for world-class skiing, but hitting the slopes doesn’t have to blow your budget. To save money, consider skiing during the shoulder seasons or weekdays when lift ticket prices can be lower. Renting gear off-site and packing your own snacks also helps cut costs. Plus, smaller ski hills around Banff offer affordable lift tickets if you want to avoid the peak prices at resorts like Sunshine Village or Lake Louise Ski Resort.
