You can actually get married at Hobbiton so someone propose to me now

Better start planning the wedding, Middle-Earth style...

As epic and action packed as the LOTR and The Hobbit movies were, The Shire always had a special place in our hearts. Far from the Orcs or the wrath of Mordor, citizens of The Shire were enjoying the good life while surrounded by gorgeous rolling hills and adorable tiny houses (which always seemed to be massive on the inside). We’ve all wanted to visit Hobbiton once in our lives, but did you know you can actually take it one step further and get married on the iconic real-life movie set in New Zealand? We know, we’re freaking out too…

The Hobbiton movie set lies in Waikato, on New Zealand’s breathtaking North Island. With no power lines, buildings or roads in sight, stepping into Hobbiton truly feels like you’re leaving the chaos of the modern world behind and becoming immersed in the magic of Middle Earth. Today, the area boasts 44 Hobbit Holes nestled cosily in the lush green pastures.

The movie set feels so real, you'll likely forget what century you're in...

Loved up Lord of the Rings fans can say their “I do’s” in the handmade gardens, which lie right in the heart of Hobbiton and boast vibrant colours and wildlife. Set against a backdrop of detailed and iconic hobbit holes, you’d be forgiven for thinking the Hobbit-folk are likely to pop out at any moment. As if that wasn’t enough, you can even host an intimate ceremony next to ‘The Party Tree’ which features in the first movie, surrounded by authentic barrels and canvas tents for added effect.

Not utterly thrilled yet? You can hold your reception in the exact replica of the pub used in the films – The Green Dragon Inn. Outdoor fireplaces and lanterns are dotted around the area, creating an atmosphere similar to the Bilbo Baggins’ birthday party. The full shire experience doesn’t even stop at the decor, your guests can indulge in the local delicacy of ‘Southfarthing Ale’ while they tuck in to an abundant feast fit for Frodo himself. After all, it is a known fact that no one in Middle Earth parties quite like the Hobbits…

The unparalleled beauty of New Zealand’s South Island means that the venue can be enjoyed by anyone – LOTR fans and non fans alike. For anyone who fancies an idyllic and serene venue for your special day, far from the sights and sounds of city life, Hobbiton should be on your list.

For the superfans, however, why not make your guests dress up as characters from the films so it feels like you have the whole of Middle Earth present to witness this new chapter of your life. I mean, what’s a Shire-tastic wedding extravaganza if you don’t make your father dress up as Gandalf? Just a thought…
