A day bag is a bag that is big enough to fit in what you may need for a day’s sightseeing (for example a backpack, a shoulder bag, a big hand bag or a ‘man bag’).

Everyone has different styles, some guys will leave the accommodation in the morning with nothing but a camera and a wallet in their pockets. Others like to be prepared for anything and will pack water bottles, umbrellas, cameras, jackets, make up, anti-bacterial wipes, pens, notes, diaries, maps, postcards, cell phones and almost anything and everything else they need into a day bag.

The size of a day bag, if you choose to use one, is entirely dependent on your personal style and what you choose to take out with you on your days in the cities.

Some tours also use overnight bags and you day bag can also double as your overnight bag.

  1. I’m bringing a 60L pack as my suitcase, so I’m looking at an alternative to a backpack for day use/carryon – or is that my best bet? I tend to carry anything I could possibly need.

  2. Tourism is important, and in some cases, vital for many countries. It was recognized in the Manila Declaration on World Tourism of 1980 as “an activity essential to the life of nations.

  3. hi Andrea-Maree, i live in qld myself and it depends on what bar/club you go into. they’re pretty easy going but def no thongs wear inclosed shoes, heals are fine, dresses are also fine but be warned it has been chilli (being winter and all :D) so make sure you bring some thing warm and during the day is alright you can sometimes get away with wearing t-shirts and shorts but id recommend packing for winter :)

  4. i wld definatly suggest a small back pack! it keeps ur arms and hands free to move and look around u can store all ur junk in it its really handy!. Also i wld have a lock on all zippers to prevent Thieves.
u can leave ur bags on the bus however the buses are really easy for ppl to break into so its partly safe and partly not

  5. i head off in 7 days on the euro panorama! im thinking of taking just a handbag.. but a secure one.. and one i can keep under my arm and hold at all times.. i dont wanna look like a tourist but i dont want to be unsafe! i heard a story of a friend who went on contiki and a girl in his tour had an over the shoulder bag.. app in piza someone tried to steal it but because it was on her arm she got dragged along with it and broke her arm.. so im a bit nervous but i think if u look confidant and be aware of surroundings at all times you should be fine :)

  6. Question: I feel like having a backpack on the bus would be convenient to keep all of my things, but I don’t want to take the backpack off the bus I would rather use a smaller sachel type bag… is there a place to safely keep belongings on the bus or do we need to take them with us? Thanks :)

  7. I’d have to disagree with regards to going out being laid back, I’ve found Bars and Clubs in QLD to be the most pretentious of places.

  8. Hi Natalie Grace, it is starting to get a bit cooler in Aus at the moment so its really hit and miss whether or not to kick around in swimmers and boardies and in regards to what people usually wear to clubs its all quite laid back here in aus, generally nice clothing, there are some regulations like men no thongs, no tops that start affiliation etc

  9. Hi I’m doing the 12 day tour from Surfers to Cairns, should I just kick around in swimmers and boardies during the day? Also what do people on the QLD usually wear out to clubs etc?

  10. I have a rolly luggage that I was planning on using for all my main stuff—but I went to MEC and couldnt resist buying a backpack too. Its pretty big but it probably wont fit everything – especially since I need to fit my DSLR in it. Im also planning on backpacking after my Contiki trip… what do you think – rolly bag or backpack.. or both?

  11. I’m doing the Ultimate European in March and am thinking of taking a tote bag on the bus to keep a travel pillow, jersey(sweater), drink bottle etc in and then putting a smaller handbag (with a long strap so it sits across my body) inside it so I can just take that out with my camera, wallet etc when sightseeing – has anyone done this? Is it a good idea?

  12. A lot of these comments are about European tours.. what about on American Tours? I heard a suggestion about bringing a backpack with a small handbag inside, so you can take what you need in your handbag, and leave everything else on the bus.. does anyone have any advice about this? Thanks!

  13. I had my camera stolen out of my backpack in Singapore but had no trouble in Europe. I used a handbag in London, but that was because I was used to the city so knew what I needed and didn’t need.
Tip to all future Contiki travellers… take a small first aid kit with you in your day bag, you aren’t always with your tour manager so you may need plasters for blisters or things like that.

  14. On my first trip to Europe I brought a backpack but soon realized I didn’t like traveling with it during the day. I felt like it was too big and screamed “I’m a tourist, come rob me!” While in Vienna I bought the most fantastic day bag. It is a small backpack with one strap that goes across the chest. It has tons of hidden little pockets inside and a nice sized pocket on the front strap, which is nice for valuables. My advice would be to buy something small enough to hold everything you need but still secure like a backpack. I take this bag whenever I travel and have even leant it out to friends when they travel. The brand of bag isn’t sold in the States but Eagle Creek has some similar ones.

  15. I’ll be going on the European Discovery tour and I am bringing a backpack. I know it comes with its own issues, however, it does have zippers that I can lock together. There are no outside pockets therefore no temptation for anyone to go snooping around plus it also doubles as an overnight bag if I should happen to need one. You could always tuck a smaller day bag inside it for when you don’t need to bring a backpack…like say out to dinner!

  16. I was in Florence at the S.M.N train station, and my handbag was on my shoulder and I was wearing it so that it sat behind my arm as I was putting stuff in my wallet and I turned because I was so conscious of having it there and as I turned and brought my bag forward this gypsy lady that was all of a sudden inappropriately close to me slinked away once I looked at her, moral of the story – you have to be aware of any bag, but I think a handbag is more secure because you can hold it at the front of your body, Best to have one that goes across your body though, so that you can still have your hands free.

  17. Explorer1091784 I was concerned about that as well. If you constantly wear a backpack on your back you don’t feel what’s going on there. I’d be scared and I am also concerned what’s a more practical choice a backpack or just an over the shoulder back with zippable pockets and many compartments

  18. Take a backpack!! I went on the European Discovery tour and needed a over night bag. I had to buy one while I was there. Save yourself the trouble and just bring a backpack it will save you alot of headaches lol trust me!!!

  19. I’m the same, I’m not sure what type of bag to take. But I think in the end a backpack is more practical, especially looking at the itinerary of some of the tours that include bike rides etc. But I am travelling around the UK after i finish my Contiki so I might purchase a handbag once I’m back there :) Hehe any excuse for a shopping trip!!

  20. Hi Helen :)
I am also doing the euro experience in sept, leaving the 12th. Is this the same trip as you? I was worried about the bag thing as well but I have decided to stick with my biiigg handbag which I can fit lots of stuff in. Basically what ever you are comfortable with.
If you wana chat email or facebook me. There are about 20 others doing this trip on facebook so far :) lani2204@hotmail.com
