9 best Scandinavian cities you need to visit

Scandinavian cities Photo: Contiki

Scandinavia is known for many things: dramatic fjords, delicious pastries, awe-striking northern lights, and impressive viking history. There’s so many reasons to visit Scandinavia and it’s the perfect destination for any traveller that craves a healthy blend of nature and city life.

Contrary to popular belief, Scandinavia only comprises Sweden, Norway, and Denmark – sadly Finland and Iceland are not included in this exclusive club (which has a very long historical explanation), but together the five make up the beautiful Nordic countries. They share similarities of course, but Scandinavia is something special. So, if you’re planning a trip up to northern Europe, chasing aurora borealis or elusive moose through the forests (but don’t actually), these are some of the best Scandinavian cities to live that Hygge life in!

1. Copenhagen, Denmark

Starting off strong with Denmark’s capital city, Copenhagen! Copenhagen has been added to travel bucket lists all over the world because of its fairytale vibes and the amazing Danish foodie scene. You can stroll through the cobblestone streets with a kanelstang in hand, stop by art and design museums, and spend the evening laughing ‘til your lungs hurt at Tivoli gardens which also doubles as an amusement park!

Copenhagen is famous for the oxidised-copper statue of The Little Mermaid that sits in the ocean just off the shore, with a background of docked boats behind to add to the fantasy. There’s so much to do in Copenhagen, so pick your activities wisely depending on how long you have. An experience we really recommend is visiting Freetown Christiania to get a taste of something a little different.

2. Oslo, Norway

Norway is commonly dubbed as the ‘happiest country in the world’ and if you don’t believe it you should probably head over to do some research of your own. The country’s capital, Oslo (we promise this list won’t just be capital cities), is filled with intriguing history and beauty – and it has a gorgeous blend of nature as well!

Oslo is home to some really unique attractions that you really can’t miss. Starting with the Viking ship museum you can get your history fix and learn about the fearsome sea-farers of the old world. Then, move on to Vigeland Park, the world’s biggest sculpture park, where you can admire some unique artworks. Oslo Cathedral’s gilded mosaic atrium can’t be missed, either, along with Akershus Fortress which has stood tall and proud since the 13th century.

3. Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm is probably one of the most beautiful Scandinavian cities – there’s not much debate to be had. From the stunning Royal Palace to the funky ABBA Museum, it’s a diverse place where you can have all sorts of cultural experiences. One such cultural experience is enjoying a traditional Swedish fika (afternoon tea) – it’s the perfect time to take a midday break and enjoy some sweet treats with new or old friends.

If you’re visiting Sweden in the summer, you absolutely must take a boat ride through Stockholm’s archipelago to view the 30,000+ islands! That’s an insane number, and seeing them for yourself is mind-blowing, but so incredibly worth it. Other experiences you can’t miss are a dip in a lakeside sauna, a taste test of local craft beers, and engaging in some friendly competition at the subterranean arcade.

4. Malmö, Sweden

Moving onto Scandinavian cities which aren’t capitals, we have Malmö! This is a coastal city in the south of Sweden (super close to Denmark!), so it boasts some gorgeous port and ocean views. The town centre of Lilla Torg is filled with charming timber-beamed houses, coffee shops, and boutiques selling local handicrafts – perfect for an idyllic few days!

If you’re in the mood for some cultural expansion of the mind, head to Malmö Castle which hosts plenty of nature, history, and art exhibits. Double up on the Christmas market fun by visiting both Copenhagen and Malmö – they’re only a short ferry ride away from each other (though be sure to wrap up for the chill of the boat).

5. Bergen, Norway

If you need proof of how stunning Bergen is, then look no further than the image below! Glittering sea to one side, dusky mountains to the other with rolling mist giving it a cinematic feel, and colourful wooden houses. Bergen is a Norwegian city surrounded by mountains and fjords – perfect for any adventurer in need of fresh air.

Drive out to Sognefjord, Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, for a day of true awe, and then come back down to earth by strolling through the cities, getting to know the locals, and trying some delicacies like reindeer steak. If you want to change your perspective, why not take the funicular or cable car up Fløyen Mountain for some hiking trails and panoramic views – definitely a stand-out reason to visit Norway! This Scandinavian city is nothing to be scoffed at, so what are you waiting for?

6. Visby, Sweden

Surrounded by old fortress walls and crowned by St. Mary’s Cathedral’s black spires, Visby is a mediaeval city infused with so much history and some amazing architecture. Fans of Studio Ghibli movies will be pleased to know that Visby was the inspiration for the town in Kiki’s Delivery Service, so if you fancy spending a magical few days we can’t recommend this Scandinavian city more.

You can take a witch trial walking tour around the city (no Kiki’s were harmed!) if history and the occult are your thing, or you can simply relax in the verdant botanical garden. You may not think Sweden is a beach destination, but it is! Dipping your toes into the sea on Gotska Beach is a must (though mind the cold), and you can also spot När Lighthouse if you’re a lover of these secluded structures

7. Aarhus, Denmark

Though Denmark’s most popular city may be Copenhagen, it’s worth travelling to the inner country as well so you can discover gems like Aarhus. Located in the North Denmark Region, this city is right on the coast offering sea views that you’ll notice is a theme of many Scandinavian cities. It’s the second largest city in Copenhagen as well, so it definitely needs to be added to your bucket list.

Aarhus’s main feature is the open-air museum in the old town, Den Gamle By. This museum features many yellow, ochre, and vermillion timber-beamed homes which have been standing for centuries, offering a history of the city. In the mood for something more modern? Aarhus Art Museum is a unique structure with what can only be described as a glass rainbow perched on the roof, and filled with contemporary art within. You can also visit the Viking Museum, Aarhus Cathedral, or the wonderful greenhouses of the botanical gardens.

So much to do, hey?

8. Odense, Denmark

Located in Denmark’s central island, Odense is a pastel city with flower-bed-flanked rivers and plenty of canal side restaurants and coffee shops. It’s similar to Copenhagen: both delightfully charming and aged, and while both are fairytale-like, Odense has to take the crown because this is the city that Hans Christan Andersen grew up in! You can visit his childhood home here to relive some nostalgia, and take a walking tour to uncover other city secrets.

St. Canute’s Cathedral, the City Hall, and Odense Castle are all impressive buildings you should visit, and you absolutely can’t miss Egeskov Castle which is just an hour out of Odense by train. A classic story-book castle, you can take a tour inside and around the vast grounds which include a mirror pond and gardens. Bliss!

9. Stavanger, Norway

Last but certainly not least on this list of Scandinavian cities to travel to is Stavanger in southern Norway. Where other cities featured here have had a pastel-wash over them, Stavanger is predominantly white and red: white wooden houses that blend in with the winter snow, and red roofs which help them retain a pop of life!

The most popular attraction in Stavanger is all the nearby hikes and cruises which will take you deep into the sapphire fjords, or high up to the summit of pulpit rock: a cliff that overlooks the bluest water you’ve ever seen. Come here for nature, and stay for the 12th century churches, the museums, and the vibrant shopping streets.
