As a non-binary black person, they have helped create a voice for others in the community who have been silenced for too long. Jalisa Luces-Mendes Amika George United Kingdom Amika George is a 19 year old student who, at the age of 17, started the Free Periods campaign to end period poverty in the UK. She has since received a Goalkeepers award by Bill & Melinda Gates, in conjunction with the United Nations, and was recently listed by TIME magazine as one of the 25 most influential teenagers in the world. Amika George Alysa McCall Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada Alysa is a conservation biologist specializing in polar bears. Based out of Yellowknife, Canada she spends every fall and part of every summer in Churchill, Manitoba, sometimes called the Polar Bear Capital of the World. Alysa has been studying Canadian polar bears for seven years, focusing largely on the western Hudson Bay sub-population, supporting research and directing conservation outreach programs, all with a mission to protect the polar bear and their sea ice home for future generations. Today, she is a community leaderships corps member for the Obama Foundation. Emily Cole Rikki Gilbey Sydney, Australia Rikki's Handplanes initiative thinks the solution to the plastics crisis is in our hands. Created using 100% post consumer plastics with 1/3 coming from Australian beaches and 2/3 coming from Australian domestic recycling bins, his company creates handplanes that enhance the bodysurfing experience by providing lift and control, allowing the bodysurfer to catch Wave After Wave and leaving nothing but cleaner beaches in their path. Rikki Gilbey Amy Hall Victoria, BC, Canada Amy is an ocean lover who created Goldilocks beeswax food wraps. The average person uses over 2000 square feet of plastic every year, and her goal is to help reduce this to zero. One of the added bonuses of her wraps is that they keep your food fresh for longer. They’re better for the environment, and better for people's wallets by saving food: it’s a win-win. Amy Hall Laura Bye Toronto, ON, Canada Laura started an organization that is rescuing stray and abandoned dogs (and cats) in countries like Mexico, Egypt and the Dominican, and pairing them with forever homes and families in Canada. This not only reduces the need for puppy mills and dog breeders but also provides medical care to animals in need in preparation for adoption. Laura Bye Parris Quinn Wellington, New Zealand Every Thursday evening after a long day at work, Parris would go home and cook 60+ hot meals and dessert from her own pay check to feed the homeless of Wellington, New Zealand. It became a regular thing and soon became a non-profit organization called 'Heart Parcels'. Now three years on, all Thursday evening meals are made in a commercial shop kitchen and the funds for the food provided are raised by selling '$25 Heart Parcels Triple Chocolate Brownie Fundraiser Boxes' at a local restaurant. Parris also provides warm clothing and Not only does Parris provide a hot nourishing meal, dessert, and water each week for the Wellington homeless, she also provides them with warm clothing, footwear, basic toiletries needs, love, encouragement and positivity with life. Parris Quinn Gina Martin London, UK Gina is a writer and activist who has campaigned tirelessly for the past two years to bring the Voyeurism Act into effect in the UK, making upskirting illegal for the first time. Gina Martin Jacob Pearce Melbourne, Australia Jacob initiated a movement around 'Pearcey's Pledge', after surviving a fall from a 22 storey building, in order to increase awareness around youth mental health and suicide. In partnership with the Alive Project he recently completed a 375km walk from the Murray River to Melbourne, raising almost $100k in the process.
