10 places like Bali to keep in mind for your next trip

Indonesia

A fan favourite destination, Bali is definitely part of the travel hall of fame. Oceans that sparkle like jewels, beaches made of diamond-dust sand, awe-inspiring temples and so much more, it’s no wonder so many people head there searching for self-discovery each year. But as amazing as Bali is, it can get a little busy, and sometimes a little expensive, but there are plenty of places like Bali that are looking to welcome you with open arms!

So, we’ve gathered a few of our favourite most relaxing and most refreshing holiday destinations so you can maybe give your fave a break and discover something new. In the words of Hugh Grant: If you look for it, Bali alternatives are actually all around…

1. Palawan, the Philippines

After Bali’s turquoise waters and paradisiacal beaches? The Philippines have got you. Affordable food, transport, and accommodation paired with just the most stunning beaches ever, you can’t go wrong island hopping in the Philippines. Picture this: a sunset melting into the horizon while you devour the juiciest mango of your life and dig your toes into hot sand. Travel with Contiki and you’ve got friends built into that package as well as some unique experiences.

2. Thai islands

If it’s the groovy island life you’re after, then look no further than Thailand. Similar beaches, similar views, similar weather, and all the same phenomenal vibes. Bali can be a perfect destination for those looking to really unwind and focus on the good vibes of life, and Thailand is a favoured companion. Beach bars? Vibrant cities filled with good food and exciting nightlife? Dance ‘til your feet fall off, then trek to a temple and soak up the sun on the beach the next day.

3. Costa Rica

Moving off the Asian continent and over to Latin America, Costa Rica offers those same luscious tropical vibes that Bali is beloved for. Costa Rica’s abundance of national parks and many rejuvenating hot springs makes up the bulk of the country’s reputation as a natural paradise. Plenty of beaches line the shores as well, though a spotlight of holidaying in Costa Rica is discovering the wildlife. And, did we forget to mention that Costa Rica is one of the more sustainable destinations? Bonus points for that.

4. Sri Lanka

Want to visit places like Bali, but cheaper? Sri Lanka is your answer. An incredibly underrated Asian country, Sri Lanka offers beaches and jungles and natural beauty for days. If it’s the cultural aspect that draws you to Bali like the many temples, you can find gorgeous and gilded Buddhist temples all over Sri Lanka as well. Take a train trip to Kandy through emerald tea plantations, or visit an ethical elephant sanctuary to observe the gentle giants around.

5. Flores, Indonesia

There’s so much more to Indonesia than just Bali, and Flores is here to prove that. Flores’ island is unique with pink sand beaches (yes!!!) and komodo dragons (f**k yes!!!). Honestly, there’s no other place in the world like it, and you’ll spend many a sunset trailing the palm-tree-lined beaches in total bliss. If you want to do Bali and Flores – best of both worlds – hop on our Indonesia Island Hopping Trip!

6. Hawaii, USA

Maybe the most quintessential ‘island paradise’ destination; we can’t talk about places like Bali without talking about Hawaii. Characterised by volcanoes and many jutting cliffs blanketed in thick tropical forests, many a day will be spent sipping from a coconut and forgetting all about your stressful days back home.

7. Vlorë, Albania

When you think of places similar to Bali, Europe may not come to mind. And within Europe, Albania may not even come to mind. But, it should. Turquoise waters, brilliant sun, and, best part, basically no crowds! Sure, you won’t get the tropical element Bali provides, but Vlorë is just like if the French Riviera and Seminyak Beach had a baby. Still a hidden gem, you’ll get the beaches to yourself, and benefit from affordable costs, even in peak summer.

8. Goa, India

With Goa, you can get one of two vibes (or, both, if you’re feeling like Hannah Montana): laid-back fishing villages and yoga retreats caressed by ribbons of sunlight, or vibrant and atmospheric stretches of platinum beaches where you can laze by day and party by night. Located on India’s western coastline, Goa gives onto the dazzling Arabian sea, and you can spend languid days at popular Palolem, Baga, or Arambol beach. An extra thing about India is you know the food is going to blow you out of this world.

9. Madeira, Portugal

Part of Portugal and off the coast of Morocco, Madeira is a volcanic island with many hidden treasures on offer. It’s often called the Hawaii of Europe and one trip there will make you understand why. Wild and jagged terrain, jaw-dropping and blood-spiking hikes, and whale watching! There’s a lot to do in Madeira, including scuba and surfing – Bali favourite activities!

10. St. Lucia, the Caribbean

Synonymous with honeymoons, romantic strolls on dusky beaches, and palm trees, St. Lucia is a must-visit destination. With similar lush and untouched landscapes to Bali, you can get lost for days wandering the national parks and rainforests, gawking at majestic waterfalls and beautiful wildlife. The palm-fringed beaches are to die for as well, naturally. St. Lucia is a more expensive and luxury option than Bali, but, hey, you deserve to treat yourself, right?
