Looking to explore Europe this summer (it is one of the best times), but want to stay off the tourist trail? Well you’ve come to the right place because we know it like the back of our hand and we love every inch. You could get lost in the cities for days, but why not discover some hidden gems in Europe instead?
Land of beautiful beaches, plenty of UNESCO World Heritage sites, ancient history, impeccable shopping, and of course the food; but there’s so much more to do and see that social media might not tell you about. So, come discover some hidden attractions and views with us – Contiki brings you the European bucket list items and the unknown treasures.
1. Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Balkan countries of Europe are easily overlooked, but we’re here to tell you that they shouldn’t be – big mistake, HUGE! Complete with sun, arid Mediterranean landscapes, and plenty of history to go around, the Balkans are incredible, so let’s start with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mostar is old and medieval and the most charming city you’ve probably never heard of. The main attraction of Mostar is the arched bridge which connects the city, flowing over some of the most turquoise water ever. You should 100% get a selfie here, but make sure not to miss the many art studios, the nearby waterfalls, and the equally intriguing Blagaj Tekke: a historic cliff-side Sufi monastery.
You can discover Bosnia and Mostar with Contiki on our Balkans Discovery trip!

2. Elverum, Norway
Norway is already a bit of a hidden gem in Europe seeing as it doesn’t have the same beachy and sunny appeal as other big hitters like Greece or Italy. But it is stunning all on its own with glittering snowfall, modern cities, and the vast forests and wild areas. Speaking of, what do you know about Elverum?
Elverum is a municipality in the middle of Norway not far from the border with Sweden. Surrounded by thick woodlands, powerful rushing rivers, moss-clad log cabins, and all sorts of wildlife like foxes, lynxes, and deer, it feels straight out of a fairytale. You can head here for the amazing sights, to join a wolf safari, or to visit unique attractions like the Norwegian Forest Museum and the Glomdal Museum which showcases artefacts from over 400 years of civilization.
3. Ljubljana, Slovenia
Continuing with another Balkan entry to this list, Slovenia is the Italy of east Europe and it’s a crime that more people don’t know this! Bordering the Alps, the country has plenty of mountain views and ski resorts, as well as vineyards which produce delicious wine. Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, may not be on your bucket list, but it should be.
Cobble-stoned streets and sunshine-yellow-washed houses, Ljubljana is dreamy and the perfect destination for those that like history. Constructed in the middle ages, Ljubljana Castle sits on a hill overlooking the entire city and serving as a beautiful focal point. You can stroll the markets here, learn about the culture, and of course try some of that Slovenian orange wine at the many wine festivals that happen here!

4. Ushguli, Georgia
Ushguli is a very small town in a valley in Georgia. It’s absolutely perfect for a day trip and a true hidden gem in Europe. The town is one of five in a community which is located at the head of the Enguri gorge, so the valley is engulfed by greenery and the sound of babbling river. With a backdrop of snowy mountains, you won’t forget it any time soon.
Georgia is full of beautiful nature spots like the Martvili Canyon and the Shkhara Glacier, so a visit here is a MUST! Ushguli lies in the Svaneti region of the country, which is better known as the Land of a Thousand Towers because of the many stone towers that have been preserved for centuries. They pop up over the rise and falls of the valley, and you’ll get to take a detour here with Contiki on our Best of Georgia adventure.
5. Wrocław, Poland
Poland is another European country that we feel just doesn’t get enough love, but if you’re a fan of elegant architecture and stained glass windows, then you have to make a trip here soon! Specifically Wrocław, an enchanting city that is as beautiful as it is interesting.
The city is known for its Market Square that glows when the gilded buildings catch the sun, the Gothic Old Town Hall complete with a gorgeous astronomical clock, and many other attractions like the impressively detailed painting depicting the Battle of Racławice in 1794. You can spend your days here walking around the city and stopping for food at Oder River-side restaurants. And, Wrocław is also one of the filming locations for a recent Hunger Games movie for all you fans out there…
Take the London to Warsaw Vistas and then hop off the Contiki coach for a trip to Wrocław!

6. Albanian Riviera, Albania
You’ve heard and probably dreamed about the French Riviera, but what about the Albanian Riviera? The same crystal clear waters and sheer cliffs but for a fraction of the price. Albania is a great budget friendly option, and that’s what hidden gems in Europe are all about.
Found along the Ionian sea, you can road trip around here and visit coastal towns like Dhërmi, Ksamil, and Jale for some time splashing in the water and eating some totally divine seafood. You’ll get all the vibes of the Mediterranean but without so many people around. We recommend taking a drive up to Butrint National Park for a dose of history in one of the most significant archeological sites of Europe.
7. Black Sea Coast, Bulgaria
Want crescent-shaped white sand beaches, plenty of sun, and maybe a sprinkling of fuschia flowers? Welcome to the Black Sea Coast in Bulgaria – a little corner of heaven tucked all the way east. The coastline stretches from Türkiye to Romania, so depending on where you land you’ll be able to see lots of different things!
Head south for stays in Varvara, a beach-club town that’ll offer you some well-needed peace and quiet, or head north for spas and resorts, as well as lush golf courses. If it’s hidden gems in Europe that you’re after, then our Ultimate European trip will give you everything you desire and more! 16 countries in 45 days, including Bulgaria, you’ll get to take a dip in the poorly-named Black Sea which is actually a glimmering blue.

8. Pamplona, Spain
Situated in the north of Spain, Pamplona may not match the image you have of the country in your head. While there are no nearby beaches, Pamplona is a vibrant city both in architecture and culture. You may know it because of the annual Running of the Bulls festival which sees, you guessed it, a hoard of six or ten bulls chase runners throughout the city.
This Basque city is so much more than that, though, and by visiting you’ll really get to a different side to the Iberian nation. Pastel streets with many coffee shops and fashionable boutiques will line your journey as you head to visit the Plaza de Castillo and the old Ciudadela de Pamplona which was used as a Renaissance military fort.
You can whizz through Pamplona with Contiki on our iconic Best of Spain trip.
9. Colmar, France
The general Alsace region of France is quite a stunner. German-influenced architecture and food, but still with that distinct French flair, it’s quite different from the rest of the country and, like all good hidden gems in Europe, it may redefine your impression of France. We recommend hitting this place up during the Christmas season for some magical markets that’ll warm even the biggest Scrooge’s heart.
Colmar, a river-side town which is overflowing in pink and blue and yellow homes, is about as charming as it gets and a great place to visit all year round. Anime fans will also be pleased to know that Colmar was the inspiration for the setting of Studio Ghibli’s famous Howl’s Moving Castle. Gawk at the gothic-style churches and indulge in plenty of wine tastings here.

10. Sutherland, Scotland
When people think of Scotland they usually think of historic Edinburgh or the mystical Isle of Skye, but where’s the love for Sutherland? Filled with mirror-like lochs and scenic escapes, Scotland is a nature and myth lover’s dreams. It’s also any castle hunter’s dream, and in this hidden area of the country you’ll get more than the lion’s share of those!
In the Highlands you’ll find Sutherland which is blessed with dramatic coasts and even more dramatic rock formations jutting out of the sea, as well as its crowning jewel Dunrobin Castle which feels straight out of a Brothers Grimm book. You can also walk or drive around Glen Loth if you’re in the mood to be alone with some sheep and cool ruined buildings.
If this is the destination you want, do Scotland with Contiki.
11. Kutna Hora, Czech Republic
Just east of Prague, Kutna Hora is a deeply historic city in the Czech Republic which holds many remnants of its Gothic and mediaeval past. You can visit a lot of churches and cathedrals here which each rival the other for the titles of “most buttresses on a single building” and “most baroque interior”. We don’t know who wins the competition, but it’s really something to see.
This one is definitely a tourist destination for those that like eerie escapes – and we mean it. One of the main attractions in Kutna Hora is none other than the eerie but also kind of mesmerising Sedlec Ossuary, a chapel adorned with a very elaborate installation of human bones. Gather any and all of your friends who aren’t easily scared for a visit here, it’s really something special.
It’s safe to say that if you’re a fan of Prague you’ll be a fan of Kutna Hora, if for no other reason than the budget friendly venues and good weather.

12. Wuppertal, Germany
Wuppertal is spectacular and we’ll tell you why: the public transport here floats!! Well, not exactly, it’s on rails, but the rails are on top of the trams! So, when you’re making your way from A to B here, you’ll be seeing the city from above, and that’s very cool. Other than the public transport, Wuppertal has a lot to offer like its museums of Impressionist art, of textile machinery and steam engines, and of Marxist theory. If you want to learn a thing or two, we suggest you do it in Wuppertal.
13. Primosten, Croatia
Game of Thrones enthusiasts have been gathering in Croatia for years for a glimpse at the real life locations, including the old walls of Dubrovnik, but have you heard of Primosten? It may not be King’s Landing, but it’s honestly pretty close, as the entire town sits on its own little islet surrounded by the sapphire Adriatic sea.
Along the historic Dalmatian coast, Primosten is adorable and will give you everything Dubrovnik or Split can but with less hassle. You’ll have more room to soak up the sun and sea breeze on the beach while all the other tourists scrabble for a good spot in other cities. While in Primosten you can take a vineyard tour (and have some cheeky sips), as well as visit the Church of St. George, Our Lady of Loretto Statue, and the quaint Statue of a Fisherman with a Cat.

14. Pico Island, Portugal
Located in the beloved Azores region of Portugal, Pico Island is a must-see destination, and without a doubt a hidden gem in Europe. The centre of the island is the eponymous volcano, Ponta de Pico, and this island has the unique quality of technically being part of Europe yet being rooted in the middle of the Atlantic between this continent and the US. Wow! As a result, it’s warm and tropical and unlike anything else Europe can usually offer, so, get yourself there and enjoy many sweaty and rewarding hikes.
15. Edam, The Netherlands
Just next door to famous Amsterdam is Edam which is smaller but feels just like its neighbouring city. Nestled up against an inlet of the North Sea, Edam is a charismatic as hell location in the Netherlands. A canal also flows through this town, so walks and bike rides along it are a must, and this is of course where the solid but creamy cheese Edam is from – so make sure to get your fill!
You can see authentic craftsmen making this cheese, as well as others, and you can sail or row around the canal if you’re after a mix of exercise and peace. Make sure to spot the flower-flanked suspension bridge on your way into town as well, it’s beautiful. We stop at Edam on our European Highlights trip, and our travellers love it everytime!

16. Cork, Ireland
When you think about Ireland it’s Dublin that comes to mind, and while we are the biggest fans of Dublin, let’s turn our attention to Cork for a moment. It’s the second largest city in the country and it’s amazing! Truly. The colourful port is the perfect cover photo for your Instagram dump, and between the English Market, a visit to the Blarney Stone for a kiss, a walk in Fitzgerald’s Park, and a tour of the City Gaol you’ll have plenty to occupy your time!
Visit some Irish legends with Contiki on our Ireland in a Week trip.
17. Palermo, Sicily
Brought forth to the public eye by White Lotus’s second season, Palermo is a coastal town in gorgeous Sicily. It’s becoming more and more popular, but we definitely still think it counts as a hidden gem in Europe because we just don’t see enough hype around it!
With grand neoclassical architecture – have you seen the Norman Palace? It has gold everywhere! – aquamarine ocean views, and interesting stops like the royal tombs and the Teatro Massimo, you’ll be awed at every corner you turn. Plus, the food is divine, and you’ll be treated to lemons that are larger than your face!
Make a stop here with Contiki on our Real Sicily trip.

18. Nisyros Island, Greece
If you want the bliss of the Greek Islands and the white-washed villas, but don’t want the hassle of crowds and booked-up restaurants, then set your sights on Nisyros. This volcanic island will spoil you just as well as Santorini or Mykonos with platefuls of fresh seafood, so-beautiful-they’re-blinding-beaches, and plenty of romantic sunset watching spots. But Nisyros’s main attraction is the handful of unique hydrothermal craters that you can visit to take you right off the beaten path in Europe.
19. Bologna, Italy
It’s hard to pick hidden gems in Italy seeing as it’s such a popular and iconic destination all round! It’s probably because of everyone’s obsession with pasta, ancient history, and la dolce vita, to be honest… But Italy has other exports, namely the pink deli meat bologna which comes from none other than Bologna! Shocker.
If you want to try some authentic cuts of meat then this is where you need to head, but don’t worry it’s not just that. Bologna is a lively city filled with history and some beautiful architecture. Popular attractions are the Renaissance-style City Hall, the Fountain of Neptune, and the Basilica de San Petronio. There’s a lot more to do here, though, and what makes Bologna so special is that it’s quite close to other Italian icons like Florence and Pisa, making it the perfect base for a holiday full of day trips.

20. Peak District, England
To put it simply, England is not known for its mountainous terrain. This terrain is, in fact, non-existent, but you could be fooled by a trip to the Peak District where the hills are rolling high, high, high! With limestone formations that look lovely in a certain light, moors that feel mythical and full of possibilities, and towns that are small, friendly, and classic – the Peak District is one of the United Kingdom’s true gems.
You may know it because of Chatsworth House, one of the area’s most notable attractions, because of its appearance in the most romantic film ever: Pride and Prejudice. So, if you’re feeling particularly regal, make sure you wear your prettiest empire waist there. And if you want a windy but short hike, head to Mam Tor for some sprawling views!
