One of the most popular tourist destinations in the world (not only according to our Voice of a Generation survey), Greece is a darling! Good food, good weather, good people, and gorgeous destinations all over the country. You have to take a trip to Greece in September at least once in your life.
Why September? Simply because it is one of the best times to visit Greece, and here’s why.
Is September a good time for Greece?
Absolutely! September brings up the rear of summer, meaning the weather is still deliciously hot, but kids are back in school so the crowds have thinned. September in general is a great time to visit Europe’s Mediterranean destinations because of the above reasons, and the possibility of getting cheaper accommodation and travel rates as tourism begins to slow down for the year.
Greece’s most popular tourist attractions – especially around the Greek islands and the various archaeological sites and ancient ruins in Athens – will still have crowds gathering around (that’s just the cost of being an icon!) but significantly less than in the high seasons of July and August.

What Greek island is best to visit in September?
The better question is which Greek islands aren’t the best to visit in September? Island hopping in Greece is the perfect September activity and they’re all pretty perfect! Seeing as you’ll be lazing on the coast, you’ll get a healthy dose of sunshine as well as a calming breeze so you don’t overheat. Consider your impending autumn blues gone!
The Cyclades, which include many islands like Santorini, Naxos, and Mykonos, are some of Greece’s favoured destinations and perfect for a visit in September; as well as flowery Rhodes, magical Crete, and utopian Corfu.
You can check out our article on Greece’s most popular islands (and underrated ones as well) to give yourself an idea of where exactly you want to spend the last of the year’s summer days.
Is Santorini worth visiting in September?
Santorini is 100% worth visiting in September, and if you can only make it to one Greek island during that time, it’s a great choice. You’ve got the sunset capital of Oia where tourists gather to watch the sun melt into the horizon over peaks and valleys made up of signature white buildings and windmills. You’ve got the capital of Fira which is alive with amazing street food (don’t forget your tipping etiquette!), lots of local boutiques, and flash nightlife. And then all the little towns between, the black sand beaches, and even a volcanic island in the centre of Santorini’s crescent-like shape.

Weather in Greece in September
The weather in Greece in September is consistent with the weather in July and August (aka, sweltering, sticky, and sunny), but with a little bit of respite. While we wouldn’t call it ‘cool’, it’s not as hot, and you’ll be treated to gentle winds and the occasional short burst of rain.
The mainland and islands will have slightly different temperatures, with the mainland generally being on the hotter side and islands being cooler because of the sea and wind.
How warm is Greece in September?
Greece’s average temperature in September is between 25-29°C (77-85°F), and the sea temperature is very warm, ranging around 23°C (73°F).

Your Greek packing list will be similar to most packing lists for summer in Europe, including:

- Comfortable walking shoes that you don’t mind getting sandy
- An outfit or two for clubbing or fancy dinners (if that’s your vibe)
- Lots and lots of swimwear!
Other essentials you must not forget are:

What to do in Greece in September?
There’s a lot to do and a lot of places to see in Greece any time of the year, but if you’re stuck for inspiration, here are some tips to help you out. Or… you could book onto one of our Greek trips and let us sort it out for you!
1. Visit the Mamma Mia filming locations
With fewer tourists flocking to the islands that make up Donna and Sophie’s home, you’re free to frolic around the Mamma Mia filming locations and sing and dance like you’re in a musical of your own!

2. Check out the historical sites
Some of the oldest structures in the world live in Greece, not to mention the many temples dedicated to the Greek gods and goddesses. September, with plenty of sunshine but slightly cooler days, is the perfect time to get your exploring on. Taking a tour of the Acropolis (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Parthenon, the Temple of Zeus, Hadrian’s Library – and so much more – is really a must-do.
3. Go to Crete
As mentioned above, all the Greek islands are immaculate and perfect and wonderful in September, but especially Crete – and this time of year is the ideal time to go! There are botanical gardens to stroll through, archeological museums to gawk at, and the Samaria Gorge to trek if you want something a little different to the beach. Crystal clear waters, but at altitude!

4. Observe the Grape Harvest
While you may know Greece for its gyros and tzatziki and otherwise scrumptious street food, you should also know that the wine production here is stellar. And September marks the start of the harvest season! Taking a winery tour is the perfect activity for Greece in September as you’ll be able to taste fresh-from-the-vine vintages, and see how the velvety drink is made.
5. Go snorkeling or diving
Greece isn’t always thought of as a diving destination, but just because it doesn’t have coral reefs to boast of, doesn’t mean the world under the crystal shores isn’t as fascinating as the one above. There are unique volcanic landscapes that extend into the sea, various caves if you’re feeling brave, or just pretty schools of fish, urchins, and loggerhead turtles to admire while you simply float.
