Desperate to explore the alluring Yucatan Peninsula, but don’t even know where to start? Mexico’s new Maya train is your transport and itinerary all in one…
Choo choo, travellers! Mexico is getting a brand new high-speed train to help intrepid travellers unearth the world-famous Yucatan peninsula. The project, supported by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador himself, kicks off just around the corner, in early 2019.
As the project is aimed to steer tourists off the beaten track and provide greater access to more remote areas, the train’s 12 (yes, 12) stops will include some of the lesser-known spots in the Southern part of the peninsula – meaning visitors who come to Cancun and Tulum can just as easily zip off to smaller towns and cities that are steeped in Mayan history and inundated with spectacular wildlife. Buckle up, your Mexican bucket list is about to be blown wide open.
Kicking off in the sun-soaked paradise of Cancun on the Mexican Riviera, and stretching all the way down to Palenque in the south, the train will connect the states of Quintana Roo, Campeche and Chiapas in a way that they’ve never been connected before.
The best part? Travellers will still get to tick off their bucket list faves with famous archaeological and historical sites such as Chichen Itza, and of course the dazzling vistas of Tulum on the Caribbean coast (where a dip in the Cenotes will no doubt refresh you for the journey ahead.)
Whether it’s exploring the vibrant colonial architecture of Merida, topping up your vitamin D on Playa del Carmen, or zip-lining past birds of paradise through the jungle, the new train will give you the very best of this unique peninsula.

As you may have guessed, this is no small project. The train, and its 930 miles of track, is estimated to cost a toe-curling 5.2 billion US dollars and take roughly four years. Yikes. One thing’s for sure though; we’ll be its first passengers when it launches! All aboard…
